Faber est suae quisque fortunae... Latin: "Every man is the maker of his own fortune"
Schools are powerful drivers of our future. After growing up believing that Brisbane State High School was the 'ultimate' thanks to an enthusiastic mother who went through there, I've come to appreciate and respect the different schools that exist. In Brisbane and Sydney, the GPS system is a marker of some of the better schools, though such membership is neither necessary nor sufficient for the school to actually be 'great'.
Fort Street High is a great school. The oldest in Australia, tracing its foundation back to 1849, it has educated some great people... yet what makes a great school?
Surely it's not just a place where people who become great go... it must be a place that consistently lifts students more than they would have been lifted elsewhere. If so, a great school should be able to help a student stand on taller giants than they would have otherwise dared.
The school motto is not necessarily a sure indicator of the culture of the school any more than a mission statement is of a company. But I do like Faber est suae quisque fortunae... "Every man is the maker of his own fortune"
What would your motto be?

What is sad in our world today is that individuals and free thinkers seem to be in the minority often being misunderstood or overlooked. People that try to do the right thing and obey the principles of moral virtue and truth are seen as behind with the times. More and more lack of respect is occurring and a great sense of instability and fear in our society. People seem to fear the truth and reality and those that try to see reality are often persecuted or told to shut their mouths. We are confronting a more turbulent and precarious future as a society and a planet and we need to come to terms with reality rather than overlook it. It saddens me that on television and in a large sector of entertainment we are confronted with 'pointless' dribble such as big brother and endless US Television shows which show no morales and respect to ourselves and others within the community. I believe that with with the recent unfortunate happenings on the television show "Big Brother" that this show needs to be axed immediately. We need to get people thinking and creating rather than just assimilating nonsense which makes their minds lazy and turns their brains to mush. Our children need role models and not degenerates and we need authority where it is necessary and for people to be accountable for their own actions. I was brought up to respect other people and to learn from the elderly as they cared for the world for myself and my generation to endure. It is sad when a lot of old people are scared and often I have confronted some elderly people who fear walking down the street or going to the supermarket as they may be attacked or harmed.
